Hey friends! Welcome to Ohio Marketing Jobs, and before anything else…THANK YOU for subscribing.

Here's what you can expect from OMJ: every week, I'll send curated marketing job postings from Columbus and across Ohio, along with the behind-the-scenes context that usually doesn't make it into a job description.

The roles worth knowing about, the companies worth paying attention to, and occasionally the conversations happening in the Columbus marketing community that are worth being part of. I'm excited to connect with all of you and be as valuable to your inbox, (and career!) as I possibly can.

But before we get into any of that, I want to tell you why this newsletter exists.

that night I recorded a video about my thoughts and just gathering myself on what I would do moving forward.

I know how it feels to lose a job in marketing.

To spend most of your day on LinkedIn… and all the uncomfortable conversations and insecurity that this chapter brings.

Here's the thing nobody tells you: you're not supposed to do this alone.

In early 2024 I went through my own personal layoff before founding my agency, MMG Design, and building my business through hundreds of networking events, conferences, and LinkedIn coffee chats that ended up growing into something more.

My podcast, Marketing By Design, is designed to help marketers by hearing successful stories of those 1-2 steps head of them. This is what I wish I had going through the job search.

Before I get into my own layoff sob story…

there are a few hard lessons that I learned from the job search- many of which, you likely resonate with:

1) The people landing the best opportunities usually aren’t the most qualified. They're the most connected.

2) Taking the traditional route and applying through a faceless job portal has a lower and lower chance of success as time goes on.

That gap, between who has access and who doesn't, is the core reason I built this.

Nobody Talks About the Part BEFORE the Search

This may be a hot take but I don't think the hardest part of losing a job is the search itself.

It's that, like, ten minute period before you tell anyone.

When you're refreshing job boards privately, crafting your "exciting new chapter" LinkedIn post that you haven't posted yet, and trying to figure out who you can actually call versus who you'll have to perform “okayness” for.

I know because I lived there.

I have definitely been there before…

When I was laid off, it happened in a sixty-person, open-floor office.

No private room, no “silent exit” for Andy.

I had to walk the floor, shake hands, collect phone numbers, and hold myself together well enough to make it to the parking lot.

I didn't quite make it. I wrote honestly about that season and what the starting point actually looked like because sugarcoating it would defeat the point.

I built this newsletter because I don't want anyone spending more time in that silence than they have to.

You shouldn't have to figure this out alone, and you shouldn't have to walk that room without people in your corner.

Now, what to expect

Ohio Marketing Jobs exists because access to good opportunities shouldn't depend on how long you've been in Columbus… or who you happened to sit next to at an event three years ago.

The conversations where jobs actually get decided? Those happen before a job description is ever written. They happen over coffee, in Slack DMs, at happy hours most people don't know about.

I want to give more people a seat at that table.

Here's what that looks like practically:

Each week, I'll share curated job postings from Columbus and across Ohio. But more than the listings, I want to be a resource. If you're in a search or thinking about one, reach out.

Every issue covers the full spectrum: in-house roles, fractional work, freelance projects, and anything else that falls under the marketing umbrella in Ohio. Organized so you can skim it in two minutes and know exactly which roles are worth your time.

I can make introductions to agency owners, marketing directors, and practitioners I've built relationships with over the years. I'm happy to facilitate those conversations and get you to the right person faster than cold applying ever will.

Selfishly, I'm ALWAYS on the lookout for the best people for MMG as well.

If you know of a role worth sharing, send it my way via this form, I'll get it in front of the right people!
